I was listening to SPI 321: Earn More Media Exposure (At Any Level) with Christina Nicholson and learned a lot form the Podcast. Here’s my Two Minute Takeaway:
- There are three types of media:
- Your Media (your website and social media). Start here so you have a place to send people! As you build up media reports, create a “media” section on your site which will help you leapfrog to larger and larger outlets.
- Other’s media (Newspapers, magazines, blogs. You get these for free by having a compelling story).
- Paid media (also known as advertising. Costs $$$)
- To get more of Other People’s Media you need:
- A great story. Stories are more important than social connections. Think of ways to help a reporter do their job by having a novel story, but remember the story they tell may not be exactly the message you wanted. If you’re not paying for an advertisement, you can’t control the story.
- When reaching out to blogs or newspapers:
- Spend some time getting to know the publication / website / journalist and tailor the email or phone call. Don’t just spam a list.
- Dedicate some time (she recommends two hours per week) to researching media outlets you want to contact and then follow up with them.
That’s it! The Smart Passive Income Website has some additional useful links in the podcast show-notes if you’ve got time.
